Rant: Merry Christmas

And a happy new year!

I must take a moment to reflect on the fact that people don't want to say merry christmas to other people, in general, unless they know for sure that the person they are saying it to is a Christian.

Also, I would like to mention that I would like to say Merry Christmas to whomever I please!

In Canada, we're not about bringing everyone down to the same level of so-called political correctness. With the "cultural mosaic" that we're supposed to be, shouldn't political correctness be the continued (or even amplified) expression of everyone's separate holidays, faiths, and traditions? If we simply use the lowest common denominator of "happy holidays", do we not lose something essential from the true expression of our own unique culture?

Regardless of political correctness, Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December. If I should want to wish someone the best on or around that day, by using the words "merry Christmas", I believe that it should not be offensive.

Conversely, I believe it would be great if people in other cultures within Canada, or just Ontario, or even just my circle of friends, would wish me the best around their times of celebration... or inform me of other days that they consider important. If we're talking about my friends, specifically, I would like to get to know them better in these regards... and perhaps, if any of them DO find merry Christmas to be offensive, I will not say it to them.

In my experience, the vast majority of people I know, of any race, creed, or faith, do not find merry Christmas to be downright offensive. Those who I have talked about it in general want me to respect their special days as well, but don't take offence at me trying to spread my good mood.

I don't want a few cranky people ruin a perfectly good seasonal greeting ("seasons greetings", clearly, being a general short form for merry Christmas or Saturnalia, or whatever you do in December), simply because they don't follow the specific tenets of Christianity.

Few outside of Christianity outright deny the fact that Jesus existed as a man anyway, so what gives?

Stupid political correctness.

Hey, my tone seems to have changed. Perhaps I'll classify this as a rant.

Anyway, most of you have probably thought the same things at some point. Perhaps not even about Christmas. I hate any time when the few ruin things for the many. I also dislike it when people would rather be quiet and not say anything than talk through their differences with someone.

nrrrrrrr.

Tired now... bed.

*snore*
